Join us for a day-long symposium to learn how nematode worms are used to make ground breaking insights into biological questions. Come meet with and learn from your nematode biologist peers in the Front Range region as well as our esteemed keynote speaker, Dr. Abby Dernburg.

Counting to One: What C. elegans has taught us about meiotic crossover control

Keynote address: 3:00pm, no registration required

Dr. Abby Dernburg studies meiosis focusing on how homologous chromosomes successfully pair and then undergo meiotic recombination. As C. elegans chromosomes only undergo a single recombination event per meiotic cycle, this process is heavily regulated and errors have serious consequences to fertility and fitness. Insight from the Dernburg lab contributes to our general understanding of meiotic errors that underlie many human birth defects and contribute to human infertility. In addition, Dr. Dernburg’s lab has been at the forefront of ground-breaking techniques and technologies in the worm field. Dr. Dernburg is an HHMI investigator and the recipient of the GSA Novitski Award, the ASCB Early Career Life Scientist Award, and the Presidential Early Career Award.

Parking

Visitor Parking near the Lory Student Center is available on West side of the Engineering Parking Lot (Lot V310) or on the South side of the Morgan Parking Lot (Lot V425). Click here for a campus Parking Map. Parking costs $1.25 per hour and can be paid at pay-by-plate credit card kiosks. If using Google Maps, type “Engineering Center, 400 Isotope Dr, Fort Collins, CO 80521” for best directions. The Lory Student Center is located just south of the Engineering Parking Lot.

The Lory Student Center is located on the North Side of Colorado State University campus. The Greyrock Room is located on the 2nd floor (200 level) of the Lory Student Center on the north side facing the V310 Engineering parking lot. The Greyrock Room is located a floor directly above the Transit Center. Click here for a map of the Lory Student Center.

We realize that this event is scheduled during Ramadan. The Lory Center has two Reflection Rooms that are set aside for prayer. These rooms are located close to our event space. Please contact Lory Center or Erin Nishimura if you need assistance scheduling these or with any other accommodations.

Food

The Symposium will start at 10am, but plan to come early for coffee. We will have a taco bar lunch. Everything is vegan at the taco bar except the taco meat. Beans will be vegan. Corn tortillas will be gluten-free. We will have coffee and cookies as an afternoon snack. No peanuts were used in food prepared at the Lory Center, but since the cookies were prepared at an off-site facility, the Lory Center can’t guarantee against nut cross-contamination. Avocado-containing foods will be set apart from the others and clearly marked.

Reception to Follow

Please join us after the event for beverages and snacks at New Belgium Brewing Company. The brewery is just a 10 minute drive from Lory Student Center and north of downtown Fort Collins. The food truck of the day is Dan’s Van which serves up a rotating menu of sandwiches, burgers, and Cajun cuisine.
