Cellular control of axon regeneration
Although axon regeneration had been studied for over a century in a variety of animal models, we do not understand the cell biology that governs the ability of damaged neurons to rebuild functional circuits. I will describe our work to develop methods to analyze axon regeneration in the model organism C. elegans, and explain how we have applied these methods to outline the genetic basis for axon regeneration, to identify several novel signaling pathways that regulate axon regeneration, and to study how rebuilt circuits control animal behavior.
Invited Speaker
Dr. Wen Chen
Wen Chen received her doctorate from Caltech in 2000 under mentorship from Dr. Paul Sternberg with whom she studied nematode behavior and G protein signaling pathways. Upon graduating, she became one of the earliest curators at WormBase at CalTech. Initially, she focused on extracting data from primary literature and building WormBase into a complete, up-to-date resource for the community. More recently, her focus has switched to integrating big data sets (microarray, RNA-seq, proteomics) into Wormbase. She is the administrator for WormBase SPELL and the developer of the WormBase SimpleMine multi-gene search tool.
An Update about WormBase Tools
WormBase, now part of the Alliance of Genome Resources, has been serving the community since 2000 by providing up-to-date biological data about nematode genomes and research from literature. WormBase continues to expand as it seeks to cover all data from the growing community, which includes those from new technologies and more species. WormBase has been striving to provide users with tools to navigate through the vast amount of data in our database to find what they need. Over the years, these search tools include Textpresso, Ontology Browser, WormMine, SimpleMine, WormBase SPELL, Parasite WormMart, and JBrowse. We will discuss new features for some of these tools and hope to hear your feedback
Parking
Visitor Parking near the Lory Student Center is available on West side of the Engineering Parking Lot (Lot V310) or on the South side of the Morgan Parking Lot (Lot V425). Click here for a campus Parking Map. Parking costs $1.25 per hour and can be paid at pay-by-plate credit card kiosks. If using Google Maps, type “Engineering Center, 400 Isotope Dr, Fort Collins, CO 80521” for best directions. The Lory Student Center is located just south of the Engineering Parking Lot.
Event Location – Greyrock Room – Lory Student Center
The Lory Student Center is located on the North Side of Colorado State University campus. The Greyrock Room is located on the 2nd floor (200 level) of the Lory Student Center on the north side facing the V310 Engineering parking lot. Food
The Symposium will start at 10am, but plan to come early for coffee. We will have a taco bar lunch. Everything is vegan at the taco bar except the taco meat. Beans will be vegan. Corn tortillas will be gluten-free. We will have coffee and cookies as an afternoon snack. No peanuts were used in food prepared at the Lory Center, but since the cookies were prepared at an off-site facility, the Lory Center can’t guarantee against nut cross-contamination.
Reception to Follow
Please join us after the event for beverages and snacks at Odell’s Brewing Company. A 10 minute drive from the Lory Student Center, Odell’s is an independent craft brewery located just north of downtown Fort Collins. Odell’s specializes in American and English style beers and is most famous for 99 Shilling Ale and Easy Street Wheat. The massive tap room and spacious outdoor beer garden have become a destination for beer connoisseurs. The food truck of the day will be “The Tramp About” specializing in American food with local ingredients and a Rocky Mountain twist. Dogs are welcome outdoors. Kids can come, too.
